Conklin is entering the final season of the three year contract he signed in 2022, but the Jets are able to use a mechanism called void years to push cap hits for a player into the future, even if his contract has already expired. This $8 million doesn’t disappear forever. The Jets will simply be charged for it in future seasons instead of 2024.
The accounting maneuver will likely lead to speculation about the Jets clearing the cap space for Haason Reddick. Whether this is actually the case is unclear. If the Jets were to agree to a long-term extension with Reddick, there is a strong possibility his 2024 salary cap hit would actually go down from its current number in excess of $14 million.
If the Jets, however, were to try to break the impasse by giving Reddick a raise for this year, the extra cap space could potentially be utilized.
Time will tell whether this actually has anything to do with Reddick.
