Leeds Exclusive: Liam Cooper opens talks to join CSKA Sofia

Liam Cooper has opened talks with CSKA Sofia over a free transfer after quitting Leeds United, sources have told Football Insider.

The 33-year-old centre-back left Elland Road at the end of June when his contract expired and has been looking for a club ever since.

Cooper had been in talks to join Hull City before the end of the English transfer window, but Football Insider revealed the deal collapsed despite all parties being keen on the move.

The transfer window in Bulgaria closed on 2 September, meaning CSKA Sofia must now need consider free agents if they want to bolster their squad.

Cooper is available for free due to the fact he’s out of contract at the moment, meaning he can be signed outside the window.

The defender has never played outside of England before outside of international football.

Cooper had been with Leeds for 10 years before his contract ended this summer, and he made 284 appearances for the West Yorkshire giants.

The central defender has experience in both the Premier League and the Championship which he can offer a new club.

Cooper has made 407 appearances throughout his entire career, scoring 19 goals and providing nine assists.

CSKA Sofia have struggled so far this season, having only won one of their opening six matches in the First League.

After conceding nine goals already, Cooper could look to help steady the ship at the back.
