Nelson’s most recent start came six days ago against the Houston Astros, where he struggled, allowing five earned runs on six hits over 4.2 innings in a 12-6 Diamondbacks victory.
After starting 27 games last season, Nelson has taken on another 27 starts this year, putting significant strain on his young arm, which had limited experience with a heavy workload prior to 2023. So far this season, Nelson has posted a 4.33 ERA with 125 strikeouts across 147 innings. Despite his up-and-down performances, the Diamondbacks have fared well when he takes the mound, going 16-11 in his starts.
Nelson was originally scheduled to pitch Monday against the Colorado Rockies, but with his injury, it’s uncertain who will fill in for the Diamondbacks in that game.
On the bright side, Lovullo mentioned that Nelson is expected to be back shortly after he is eligible to return. The earliest Nelson can return is September 27th against the San Diego Padres.
In a corresponding roster move, the Diamondbacks selected Brandon Hughes from Triple-A Reno. Hughes last pitched for the Diamondbacks on June 28th. Overall, this season, he has allowed 16 earned runs across 14 innings out of the bullpen.
