West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has labelled Alex Mowatt’s level of finishing against Portsmouth as ‘magic’.
West Brom won 3-0 at Fratton Park to extend their impressive start to the new Championship season.
Striker Josh Maja opened the scoring for the Baggies against Pompey inside the first minute. Midfielder Mowatt then added two more goals for the visitors, one of which was a free-kick.
Speaking after the match, Corberan told their official club website: “Alex Mowatt’s level of finishing for his two goals was excellent and magic. We know he’s a player with very good finishing, so hopefully he keeps on giving us this level.
“The fact we are now top of the table shows how important it is to compete with the right mentality. If you don’t play with the right mentality, then it is very difficult to win these games. We know how difficult this competition is, but all of the players need to know this.
“Every opponent is going to make things difficult for us. We can only focus on the things that we can control. The key is to be focused if we’re going to carry on achieving results.”

They won’t be getting carried away with themselves though and will be eager to keep their consistency levels up.
Mowatt has been on the books at The Hawthorns since 2021 and has made 89 appearances in all competitions to date, chipping in with eight goals.

He penned a two-year extension this past summer on his contract meaning his deal now runs out in 2026 which is good news.
The Doncaster-born man rose up through the academy ranks at Leeds United and broke into their first-team as a youngster.
He went on to play 125 matches for the Whites before switching to Barnsley in 2016.
Mowatt spent five years at Oakwell, some of which was spent away on loan at Oxford United, before linking up with the Baggies.

It initially took him a while to adapt to life with West Brom and he was loaned out to Middlesbrough a couple of years ago.
He has since been handed a new lease of life by Corberan and is playing some of his best football these days.
What next for West Brom?
They are back in action this weekend at home to Plymouth Argyle as they look to keep their momentum going.
It won’t be an easy game though as their upcoming opponents head into it on the back of their 3-2 victory over Sunderland.
