New York Yankees Finish Series Finale With Seattle Mariners After 3-2 Loss
The New York Yankees fell in the series finale to the Seattle Mariners after giving up three first-inning runs. Here’s how the Yankees played in the 3-2 loss on Thursday: 1. A rough first inning put the Yankees behind early. Clarke Schmidt took the mound for the Yankees on Thursday and he fell into trouble early. Julio Rodriguez singled to lead off the bottom of the first. The pitcher then recorded the first out of the inning before giving up a walk and another single to load the bases.
Back-to-back sacrifice flies drove in the first two runs of the game and a J.P. Crawford single made it 3-0. Schmidt only made it out of the inning after getting a double play with the bases loaded. The starter went on to pitch five innings and allow three runs in the loss. Related: The New York Yankees Are Playoff Bound 2. Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s home run wasn’t enough for the Yankees offensively.
The Yankees responded to the Mariners’ first with a productive third inning. Logan Gilbert got the first two outs of the inning before Aaron Judge singled. That brought Chisholm up to the plate with a runner on base. He hit a 1-1 pitch over the center field wall to bring the score to 3-2. Unfortunately, that was the only run production that the Bronx Bombers could muster throughout the game.
The team went 1-12 with runners in scoring position and was on the wrong side of the one-run game. Related: New York Yankees Clinch Playoff Berth In 2-1 Wednesday’s Extra-Inning Victory 3. The Yankees bullpen continued to shut down opponents. Three Yankees relievers combined for three no-hit innings to close out the game. Jake Cousins and Tim Hill combined to pitch the sixth and seventh innings while Clay Holmes threw a scoreless eighth.
The bullpen allowed two runs over 10 innings pitched throughout the series and has been a strong point as of late. The team will look to rely on its relievers as the Yankees move closer to October baseball. Casey Fahrer is a recent graduate from Syracuse University and a contributor to Inside The Pinstripes.
