Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill finally shed light on why his franchise was unable to retain veteran defenseman Chris Tanev, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs this summer. In an interview with The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun published on September 18, Nill emphasized that personal factors played a significant role in Tanev’s decision, despite Dallas wanting to keep him. “We loved Chris, he was a perfect fit, and even he admitted that,” Nill said. “But in the end, he’s
from Toronto, he’s toward the end of his career-they offered something we couldn’t offer.” Nill also acknowledged the personal considerations Tanev had to weigh, particularly with family and returning home being a key factor. “These players have to make decisions, too, they have families,” Nill said. “I respect that, and I’ve got full respect for Chris. He came in here and did a great job, and we would have loved to have him back.” Tanev, 34, could have re-signed with the Stars but Dallas chose to trade his negotiating rights ahead of the start of free agency on July 1, making their stance clear. Nill did address the team’s efforts to replace Tanev, mentioning the signings of Matt Dumba,
Ilya Lyubushkin, and Brendan Smith to strengthen the defense. “It’s a big void,” Nill admitted. “But we have good leadership. Guys have been tutored by him, and they’ve been around him.” Tanev arrived in Toronto after scoring 2 goals and assisting 19 for the Stars through 75 regular-season games last year. He also appeared in 19 postseason games, scoring 2 points before Dallas crashed out in the Western Conference Finals.
