Tottenham Hotspur are back in European action after last season’s absence as they host Azerbaijani side Qarabag FK in their UEFA Europa League opener. It will be Ange Postecoglou’s first taste of European football in the dugout of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, after the Australian guided the club to a fifth-placed finish in his debut season in charge. Here are all the details on how to watch.
Ange Postecoglou will lead Tottenham Hotspur for the first time in a European competition as the north London club face Qarabag FK in their UEFA Europa League opener on Thursday.
Spurs were forced to sit out of European action for the first time since 2009/10 in the previous campaign – Postecoglou’s first as manager of the club – after a poor 2022/23 season saw them land eighth in the Premier League table.
But Spurs are back in Europe, and fresh off the elation of a dominant win over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday – overturning Bryan Mbuemo’s goal in the first minute in a strong response to their 1-0 setback against rivals Arsenal in the previous week.
Spurs were most recently in the Europa League in the 2020/21 season, exiting the competition in the last 16, having seen a 2-0 aggregate lead overturned by Dinamo Zagreb in a 3-0 second-leg defeat.
But they now return to the competition with its brand new format, and take on Qarabag in their opener – a side who have qualified for the Europa League for the third consecutive year, and sit top of the Azerbaijani top-flight.
