Brewers sign pitcher who quit Mets … as teams battle in MLB playoffs
As the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers face each other in the NL Wild Card Series, the two organizations were also involved in an odd transaction late Monday.
According to USA TODAY MLB insider Bob Nightengale, right-handed pitcher Vinny Nittoli opted out of his Mets contract and signed with the Brewers, who also invited him to MLB spring training next season.
Nittoli, 33, has pitched at the major-league level for five teams, including the Mets in 2023 for 3 2/3 innings. Nittoli rejoined the Mets in mid-August and pitched another 3 2/3 innings at Triple-A. In 2024, he was also with the Oakland A’s and Baltimore Orioles, where he accumulated 12 innings altogether in nine appearances, and the Chicago Cubs, though he never reached the majors there.
According to MLB Trade Rumors, Nittoli opted out of his Mets deal at the end of August.
Now, he’ll join the team that’s in the Mets’ way of reaching the NL Division Series.
