Mark Robins makes Coventry City goalkeeper ‘first’ claim as competition hots up between the posts
Coventry City news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues boss Mark Robins addresses the subject of his goalkeeper selection this season
Mark Robins insists he’s got the strongest goalkeeping department he’s had in his time with Coventry City.
The Sky Blues boss has added new signings to the position in successive summers, with Brad Collins signing last year and Oliver Dovin joining from Sweden in July as the released Simon Moore joined Sunderland on a free transfer. But despite the latest addition starting the new season, the manager has gone back to one of his star performers from the 2022/23 campaign, Ben Wilson, following a poor start to the current term.
Explaining his decision to put the 32-year-old – now the oldest member of the squad – back in against Leeds last weekend, after which he kept a welcome clean sheet against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night, he said: “He’s experienced quite a bit with us, especially the season before last when he took all the plaudits in team of the season with 22 clean sheets we had that year, a club record. At this moment in time it was a decision I wanted to take because he has a different voice and different influence, and he’s a really decent communicator with the players in front of him.”
