Exclusive: Liverpool & Brighton race to sign sensation who’s ‘wowed’ Darwin Nunez.
Liverpool and Brighton are closely monitoring Colombian sensation Clarens Culma Mejia, sources have told Football Insider.
The 20-year-old defender, who offers versatility in being able to play as a left-back or a central defender, has a growing reputation in south American football.
Talent spotters from the two Premier League sides have been hugely impressed in the Atletico Nacional rising star, with Darwin Nunez said to have been “wowed” by what he’s seen of the defender.
The Liverpool striker recommended him to the club’s recruitment team based on what he’s seen, and the Reds are now actively monitoring him.
Neither would be able to sign him until the January transfer window at the earliest, but it is believed that Culma’s contract is expiring soon.
Brighton have conceded eight goals in the opening six games of the Premier League season, while Liverpool boast the best defensive record after letting in two.
Liverpool are in the market for a defender
The Reds are in the market for a new central defender moving forward, particularly if Virgil van Dijk doesn’t sign a new contract.
The Netherlands international’s current Anfield deal expires next summer, which would lead to him leaving on a free transfer if a new deal isn’t agreed.
Mejia’s ability to cover multiple positions plus the fact he’s only going to improve moving forward does also make him an option.
