Carlos Corberan insists more work to be done by West Brom summer signing duo.

Albion boss Carlos Corberan claimed Mikey Johnston and Lewis Dobbin still have work to do to force themselves into a starting berth.

Wide attacking duo Johnston, 25, and Dobbin, 21, were summer captures at The Hawthorns but both are still awaiting a first Championship start of the season.

That could come at home to Millwall today, prior to the international break, but head coach Corberan said in the wake of Tuesday’s defeat to Middlesbrough that both still had work to do.

Why former Millwall attacker Jed Wallace is struggling for West Brom game-time – and how he has reacted

JED Wallace finds himself in an unfamiliar position ahead of West Bromwich Albion’s meeting with his former side Millwall on Saturday – but it will come as little surprise to Lions fans how he has reacted to it.

Wallace, 30, a hugely popular figure at The Den, left to join the Baggies on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 and was made club captain after one season.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portsmouth attacker Wallace made 81 Championship starts in his first two campaigns at The Hawthorns, but has been in boss Carlos Corberan’s team just once this season. It didn’t go to plan, as Wallace was taken off in the 54th minute against Middlesbrough on Tuesday and replaced with Tom Fellows.

Fellows, 21, is an Albion academy graduate and has been called into the England under-21 squad this season.

NewsAtDen this week spoke to West Brom reporter with the Express & Star, Lewis Cox, to find out why Wallace has struggled to get into the side. Wallace was a regular across his five full seasons with Millwall and the club were desperate to keep their best player with his contract running down in 2022.

Wallace, though, made the decision to leave to pursue his dream of playing in the Premier League, which he thought Albion offered the best chance of fulfilling. West Brom finished ninth in 2022-23 and fifth last season, Coberan’s first in charge, before losing to eventual winners Southampton 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

Wallace was a key figure for the side in his first campaign as club captain, often starting in a role that didn’t play to the strengths Millwall fans would have been used to seeing.

“Jed had to start a number of games essentially as an emergency striker, really,” Cox says. “Which he was first to admit isn’t his position, it’s not a role he has played too often across his whole career.

“Josh Maja was injured, it only left Brandon Thomas-Asante who had to shoulder all of the burden. Jed along with one or two others had to play the role.
