Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has sent a defiant message following his penalty being saved by Jordan Pickford when facing his former club Everton at Goodison Park

Former Everton winger Anthony Gordon has admitted that Newcastle United’s failure to win at Goodison Park fell on his shoulders. Gordon left the Blues for the Magpies in acrimonious circumstances last year.

And on his third return to his former club, he missed a couple of big opportunities to score in the 0-0 draw, including a penalty in front of the Gwladys Street that was saved by his former club colleague Jordan Pickford, who remains an England team-mate.

Gordon’s failure from 12 yards out prompted a deafening roar from the home fans, who celebrated the miss wildly. And the player who grew up in Kirkdale took to social media to get his post-match thoughts across.

The 23-year-old told his 462,000 Instagram followers: “A great performance, just couldn’t put them away, and that’s on me.

“Never easy missing but you’ll never ever see me shy away from stepping up for my team. Thanks to everyone that travelled – till (sic) next time.”

Gordon joined Newcastle United for £45million in January 2023 after missing three training sessions in his final week at Everton – with only the first day described as a “planned absence” by the club.

His exit was confirmed by the Blues with a spartan 59-word announcement which did not thank him for his efforts or wish him good luck for the future.
