Danny Welbeck has a brilliant new nickname for Georginio Rutter after Leeds United hero scores for Brighton again.

Georginio Rutter produced his best performance for Brighton on Sunday evening as the Frenchman scored one and created another in a 3-2 win over Archie Gray’s Tottenham.

Rutter clocked up his sixth game for Brighton and his fourth start for The Seagulls since Fabian Hurtzeler’s side splashed a club-record £40m fee to land Rutter from Leeds in the summer, a £5m profit for Leeds.

It comes after the former Rennes and Hoffenheim star sparkled for Leeds last season. He played 51 times for Leeds, having a hand in 24 goals as Leeds came within an inch of promotion to the Premier League.

But defeat to Southampton in the play-off final saw Rutter opt to go when Brighton came calling. Off he popped to the south coast and against Chelsea last week, Rutter scored his first goal with a brave header.

Kaoru Mitoma laid on Brighton’s first two, initially setting up fellow new signing Yankuba Minteh before laying in Rutter, who turned Spurs inside out before lashing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Then, Rutter received the ball by the corner flag and bamboozled a couple of Spurs defenders before managing to produce a chipped cross to find unmarked Welbeck to head home, and Brighton win 3-2.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Welbeck said he had a new nickname for Rutter after the Frenchman’s superb assist on Sunday evening: “I nicknamed him velcro as his touch sticks to him – it was a nice assist.”
