Baltimore Ravens defensive backs becoming team’s Achilles’ heel.
In a tightly contested “Battle of the Beltway,” the Baltimore Ravens claimed a 30-23 victory over the Washington Commanders in Sunday’s matchup, keeping them in pole position in the AFC North.
Coming off their fourth straight win, the Baltimore Ravens are finding their identity through a high-powered offense. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry have both demonstrated performances worthy of MVP consideration, as the offense has emerged as one of the most adaptable in the league.
In stark contrast, the performance of the Ravens defense this season has struggled. They rank among the top teams in defending against the run, yet simultaneously, they are one of the least effective teams in pass defense, surrendering 24.8 points per game (the third most in team history after six games). Historically, the Ravens rushing defense has been strong, but the current disparity is unprecedented.
It’s no secret that the Ravens possess skilled cornerbacks in Marlon Humphrey, Brandon Stephens and Nate Wiggins who are supported by athletic safeties positioned behind them. However, the pass-funnel defense continues to be a significant issue, particularly with offensively focused opponents looming.
The lingering question is the potential of this team. The jury is still out on whether the Ravens can maintain this momentum throughout the remainder of the season while simultaneously compensating for defensive deficiencies.
Heading into Week 7, the expectations are high. The Ravens travel to Tampa Bay this week for “Monday Night Football,” where they will encounter another formidable offense in the Buccaneers, who currently hold a record of 4-2 and just put up 594 total yards on the New Orleans Saints.
