Former Stoke City boss early frontrunner to take over at League One’s bottom club
Gary Rowett has been out of work since last year
Gary Rowett has been named as the bookies’ early favourite to take over at winless League One side Burton Albion.
Rowett launched his managerial career at Burton back in 2012 and had two successful years before heading down a path which took him to Birmingham City, Derby County, Stoke City and then Millwall. He consolidated Millwall’s position in the Championship and had them competing for a play-off spot over four years before leaving 12 months ago.
He has taken on punditry duties since then, including for Sky Sports and a column here, and has his own podcast but he has been put as 4/1 frontrunner to replace Mark Robinson, followed by Port Vale favourite Gareth Ainsworth (8/1), who is looking for his first job since leaving Queens Park Rangers last year. Mark Kennedy, Leam Richardson and Darren Stride are priced 10/1.
Robinson left Chelsea’s development squad in June to take over from former Stoke foward Martin Paterson, who had steered the club to League One safety when he took charge in January. But they have won none of their opening 11 league matches, scoring 13 times and letting in 24.
He had been the first appointment made by Burton’s new owners – the Nordic Football Group – when the Sweden-based consortium took control in the summer.
Sporting director Bendik Hareide said: “We have to be objective with our decision-making, and we feel we have reached a point where a change is necessary to improve the team’s results. We believe we have a talented squad, and we remain committed to our football strategy. Now is the time to re-group and look to deliver a positive season for our fantastic supporters.”
