Ruben Amorim could seek a reunion with the former Coventry City player if he replaces Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim’s first signing as Manchester United manager could be a player Coventry City know very well.

United are looking to appoint Amorim as the replacement for Erik ten Hag. The Reds confirmed the departure of Ten Hag on Monday, less than 24 hours after the club’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League.

The Manchester Evening News understands Amorim has agreed in principle to become the next United manager. Compensation is now being negotiated by the clubs.

Should Amorim take over, speculation will immediately centre on potential transfer targets ahead of the January transfer window. It will also likely lead to rumours that Amorim could take some of his set-to-be former Sporting players to United.

Former Sky Blues striker Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move away from Sporting in recent years, with Arsenal reportedly interested last summer and January earlier this year.

Gyokeres scored 43 goals in 50 appearances for Sporting last season and already has 14 in as many games this term for the Portuguese club. The striker, who signed for Sporting in 2023 from Coventry, is reported to have a €100million (£83.4million) release clause in his contract.
