Coventry City’s slice of Viktor Gyokeres’s next transfer fee may not be as big as the Championship club hope, according to the latest reports about the Sweden international’s future.

And the timing of any cash windfall for the Sky Blues is likely to not come until next summer, rather than boosting Mark Robins’ transfer kitty for the January transfer window.

City have a 10 percent sell-on clause in the deal Doug King negotiated in the summer of 2023, which has seen the club earn around £20m after the 26-year-old striker hit add-on targets for goals, appearances and honours for Sporting Lisbon last season, helping the club become Portuguese champions.

Sporting are reportedly prepared to let Gyokeres leave the club next summer with four Premier League clubs reported in the race for the centre-forward.

Gyokeres is currently contracted to the Portuguese giants until 2028, with his release clause set at £85m. If he went for that figure City would get 10 percent of the difference between what they sold him for and selling fee, meaning they’d bank around £6m.

However, according to Sky Germany, an agreement has been reached that Gyokeres will be able to leave for between £50m and £58m, meaning Coventry would get between £3m and £4m as their slice.

The report further claims Gyokeres will not leave Sporting during the January transfer window, but a move next summer is considered likely. It is claimed that Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are among those tracking Gyokeres, and they have reportedly been informed of the significant drop in the 26-year-old’s price tag.

Manchester United, it is claimed, are not considered to be in the race at this stage, but the Red Devils position could change if Gyokeres’ current head coach at Sporting, Ruben Amorim, takes charge of the Premier League side as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.
