Jets Hit Reset Button in 2025 Mock Draft
It’s hard to blame New York Jets fans for getting excited over Thursday’s Week 9 win over the Houston Texans. But for the part of the fan base that need a little more than two quarters to feel reinvigorated, the question of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future remains prescient. When the Jets look for a new head coach (and potentially general manager) in a few month’s time, it will be the biggest question facing the organization. Will a high-profile play-caller want to be tied to a passer who can’t seem to stop drawing plays in the dirt? Might a candidate balk at being less powerful than his veteran quarterback.
Cap implications aside, Rodgers stepping aside ahead of 2025 is the quickest way for New York to have a clean reset and transition into the next era of Jets football. That starts in the first round of April’s NFL Draft in Pro Football Network’s recent mock draft. There, New York took Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the fourth pick – the second quarterback off the board, behind Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. “Ward’s arm is a rubber band that generates unbelievable levels of velocity to all three levels of the field,” Dalton Miller wrote.
“His athleticism allows him to extend plays within the pocket and outside it. He is a passer first who does a fantastic job keeping his eyes downfield. “The only thing keeping Ward from being the first pick in the draft is his post-snap process and his lack of structural integrity as it pertains to the offense. In short, he makes more decisions too often, and he doesn’t thrive within that 2.5-second NFL timeline.” Ward’s unique ability to truly spin it is unrivaled among the class’ top passers. He can effortlessly impact every level of the field and remains in control out of structure. His base can get messy – downright ugly on his worst days – but his upper-body mechanics make it work with the help of a special arm.
