The University of Bedfordshire graduate was in charge when Watford came from 2-0 down to equalise with five minutes of normal time remaining at St Mary’s in April.

After the fourth official had signalled seven minutes of injury time, Smith played on for a further two during which time Flynn Downes scored a winner following a handball which the referee and his team of officials all missed which ended Cleverley’s unbeaten run as then interim head coach.
