Members News: Ex Sky Blue Defender Is 33 Today. ‘Happy Birthday’, Nathan!!

It was just in January 2022 that we welcomed to the Association our then latest signing, central defender Nathan Cameron who featured for the Sky Blues from 2009-13. Now there is another reason to celebrate as the Birmingham born (21st November 1991) defender is enjoying his 33rd birthday today. Congratulations!

Nathan progressed through the CCFC academy system captaining both U16 and U18 sides. Nathan got his first team debut off the bench on 12 August 2009 playing the last quarter of an hour of a single goal League Cup home defeat by Hartlepool United (his only appearance of that season).

Nathan earned his senior professional contract (initially for one year) for the Sky Blues and found himself out on a loan spell at local non league side Nuneaton Town from March 2010, when he played thirteen times and netted once, Then, Nathan made his first Sky Blue league start in the opening game of the 2010–11 season, playing the full ninety minutes, in a 2–0 win over Portsmouth but subsequently was used sparingly to deputise for the likes of James McPake, Ben Turner or Richard Wood (all now fellow CCFPA members).

In February 2011, Nathan made his England U20 debut (his sole cap) in a 2–1 defeat to the France U20 XI. Despite extending his contract to the end of 2013, a knee injury in 2012 further restricted his appearances.

In the Sky Blues’ goalless draw against Watford on 17 March 2012, Nathan’s long awaited debut goal for the Sky Blues was wrongly chalked off by the referee (reportedly leading to an apology from the ref)! Several periods of injury stalled Nathan’s later contribution to the Sky Blues campaigns during which they suffered relegation from the Championship.

With stiff competition for Sky Blue defensive places, in March 2013 Nathan was loaned to League Two side Northampton Town until the end of the season and made a handful of appearances for the Cobblers but this included a play-off final at Wembley! At the end of the 2012-13 season Nathan was one of five players released by the Sky Blues having made a grand total of 52 Sky Blue first team appearances (L.41+7 subs FAC 0+1 LC 0+1 Others 2)
