Jets Linked to Trade for $275 Million QB Amid Rodgers’ Uncertain Future
It’s anyone’s guess who might line up at quarterback for the New York Jets next season, but chances are it won’t be Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is starting this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks, per a statement from head coach Jeff Ulbrich on Monday, Nov. 25, and the QB is under contract through next season.
But Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on Saturday that Rodgers wants out of New York, adding that owner Woody Johnson appears all to happy to oblige. In the same report, Russini linked the Jets to a potential offseason trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Replacing Rodgers won’t be easy. The free-agent QB market is lacking, with Sam Darnold and Russell Wilson among the top names – though Wilson is expected to stay with the [Pittsburgh] Steelers and the [Minnesota] Vikings could decide to keep Darnold if he’s willing to be a backup,” Russini wrote. “The Jets could explore trading for Trevor Lawrence or drafting a quarterback, though the 2025 draft class appears weak.”
The Jaguars inked Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million extension in June that keeps him under contract through 2030. However, Jacksonville’s season has come off of the rails and the franchise would select No. 1 overall in next year’s NFL draft were it held today.
Head coach Doug Pederson could be on his way out as the team likely heads into rebuild mode, and having one of the most expensive QBs in the history of the sport on the roster for the next six seasons is antithetical to the notion of scrapping the blueprint and building something new from the ground up. The Jets, on the other hand, believe they have a championship-caliber roster in place outside of the quarterback position, which renders New York a reasonable landing spot for a player like Lawrence who recently turned 25 years old.
