What Trent Alexander-Arnold sang at Anthony Gordon when the Newcastle winger was in talks to sign for Liverpool
Anthony Gordon will be up against England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold tonight, as Newcastle United face Liverpool at St James’ Park.
However, they could have been playing for the same team this season, and that is not because Newcastle United wanted to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Anthony Gordon almost went the other way, at a time when Toon officials were desperately trying to comply with PSR. A points deduction was not an option for PIF, which meant Newcastle had to find a way.
That resulted in Newcastle offering Gordon to Liverpool, with a £75million move floated. The deal would have seen Joe Gomez move the other way for £45million, after the Reds said no to Jarrell Quansah leaving.
But Gomez was keen to join Newcastle, while the chance to play for Liverpool obviously appealed to Gordon. He was a fan growing up and his family still live in the area, while it would be a chance to play Champions League football again.
While all of this was going on, Gordon was away with England. He was representing the Three Lions at Euro 2024 in Germany, on the back of his best season ever.
