Training Ground Guru | Why Norwich are defying convention with their 'new' backroom team

“Nowhere near the level”” – Norwich City told to take transfer action in January.

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Norwich City are aiming to finish in the play-offs once again this season.

Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side have made a mixed start to the new campaign, going through a lot of ups and downs since his summer appointment as manager.

The January transfer window offers the club an opportunity to potentially close the gap to their top six chasing rivals.

If funds are available to spend, then additions could prove crucial in their battle for a place in the Premier League.

When asked how many new players do they expect the club to sign in January, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes suggested he’d like to see up to three.

He has highlighted the attack as one area that should be addressed, as well as defensive midfield.

“In an ideal world, I think a striker and a winger would be lovely,” Downes told Football League World.

“Also, a defensive midfielder, but we have been crying out for this for a long time, ever since [Alexander] Tettey left.

“We’ve made do with [Kenny] McLean, but then we’ve seen what it’s like when he’s not playing.

“He’s really missed, [Jacob] Sorensen isn’t that guy, he looks like he’s nowhere near the level of McLean.

“But even he’s not an out-and-out defensive midfielder, and sometimes that is what you need, especially if we are preparing to have a promotion push, and also when we’re in the Premier League.

“You do need that defensive midfielder, you can’t just be playing with three not-quite defensive midfielders because you’re going to get caught out.”

Josh Sargent
Signings at Norwich could be a big difference-maker
Norwich are currently relying a lot on Borja Sainz for goals, with the forward bagging 15 so far this season.

With Josh Sargent’s injury issues, another forward to provide stronger competition for the American could be a wise use of their resources.

Meanwhile, trying to make the team more defensively sold with a new midfielder would also be smart, especially given McLean will turn 33 next month.

It remains to be seen how much they will have to spend this January, but Norwich should be on the lookout for any additions that could prove significant in their push for promotion.
