But he still has an affinity for Newcastle where he burst onto the scene in 1993 after signing from Bristol City for a club record £1.75m. He went on to score 55 goals in 70 games at St James’ Park which earned him the move to Old Trafford.

“I’d like to see Sunderland back in the Premier League so they can play Newcastle on a regular basis again,” Cole told CardPlayer.com (www.cardplayer.com). “It’s a massive derby. Both sets of fans would relish that and although there is a long way to go, Sunderland are in a good place in the Championship and one goal will be to bring back regular derbies.”

Meanwhile, Sunderland will cover ‘moderate’ distances over the Christmas period compared to some rivals. Plymouth Argyle will cover the longest travel distance of any Championship side, journeying 681 miles across two away matches from December 20-30. This is in stark contrast to some teams, with data experts at Grosvenor Sport (www.grosvenorcasinos.com/sport) working out that some will have to travel less than a quarter of Argyle’s total.
