Once again, Liverpool didn’t require a first half of any discernible quality to waltz to a Premier League victory.
An early Jordan Ayew goal on Boxing Day meant the league leaders played from behind early doors against Leicester City, but there was really never any doubt that Arne Slot’s Reds would find a way past the Foxes to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Cody Gakpo’s stunning strike in first-half stoppage time set the stage for a barrage after the restart, with an eventual 3-1 victory depicting the potency of this Liverpool team. Easing through the gears is no issue, especially with Slot tinkering tactically to aid his side’s chances of success.
The Reds will be desperate to end the year on a high before Manchester United come to town to kick-off 2025. They face West Ham on Sunday afternoon, and here’s the starting lineup Slot could pick in east London.
GK: Alisson – The Brazilian has found clean sheets hard to come by since returning from injury, but Caoimhin Kelleher only has a look-in if Alisson returns to the treatment table.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – The full-back marvel was unrelenting in his pursuit to tee up teammates at the back post on Boxing Day, especially in the first half, before Liverpool changed tack after the restart. Slot will be wary that Alexander-Arnold played the full 90 on Thursday, but Conor Bradley still isn’t available.
CB: Joe Gomez – Ibrahima Konate will assume a starting position once he returns to the fold, but Gomez, as he did last season, is proving himself to be a more than able deputy.
CB: Virgil van Dijk – Ayew’s Boxing Day strike deflected in off the boot of Van Dijk, who had little else to do as Liverpool suffocated Leicester for almost the entirety of the contest. Jarrod Bowen’s energy will give the Dutchman something to think about on Sunday.
