The blurb suggests that the focus will be on his playing days at Manchester United and Barcelona rather than his time on the touchline at the bet365 Stadium, where he oversaw three top half finishes in the Premier League and some of the most exciting football ever produced by a Stoke team before the wheels fell off.

Hughes is interviewed for the programme too, talking about his struggles at the Nou Camp compared to the success of Lineker and how a Cup Winners’ Cup final had a dramatic impact on his professional life.

Beckham said: “There are certain players that played for United over the years that set the tone of the club. That is why Mark is part of Manchester United history.”

Hughes was on the books of Man Utd from the age of 14 and he was signed for Barca by Terry Venables at the age of 22.

He might have been welcomed to Stoke by a ‘Hughes Out’ van on his first day in the job but even that pales next to what he faced in Catalonia.

I didn’t have that confidence to say ‘I’m not going’ and it just kept going and I found myself on a plane flying to Barcelona,” he said.

“When you have 90,000 waving a white handkerchief, that is a bit hard to take. I faced a level of criticism not a lot of players had faced at that time, certainly as a young player.”

He returned to Old Trafford via a loan spell at Bayern Munich and played for clubs including Chelsea Southampton and Everton before his managerial career with Wales, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Stoke, Southampton and Bradford City.
