‘I’m disappointed’ – Liverpool prodigy Jayden Danns speaks out after Sunderland transfer twist
Sunderland beat off competition from Hull City and Blackburn Rovers to sign Liverpool youngster Jayden Danns
The deadline day loan move for Jayden Danns was not straightforward in the end. Sunderland’s delight at signing the highly-rated Liverpool lad was tempered by the news that the striker has a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation before he can make his debut.
Danns is extremely well regarded on Merseyside, so much so that he signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool before committing to Sunderland for the rest of the season. he has appeared for Arne Slot’s side on four occasions this campaign, including in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven.
Sunderland are signing a player of huge potential as they look to maintain their promotion push. Regis Le Bris’ men sit fourth in the Championship, hot on the heels of Leeds United and Sheffield United, who occupy the top two positions.
Securing the services of a striker to aid their quest was of paramount importance to Kristjaan Speakman and the Sunderland recruitment team during the winter transfer window. Having missed out on the likes of Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon to Sheffield United, and Marcus Edwards to Burnley, landing Danns was a boost.
However, the player will have to wait before he can help his new team-mates. At his medical, a back injury was identified and the 19-year-old will have to return to Liverpool’s training ground for the first part of his rehab.
It’s a temporary setback, but Danns is delighted to be part of the squad, and says he did his homework on the club before joining, having had offers from fellow Championship clubs Hull City and Blackburn Rovers.
