Kevin Durant wants to reunite with his former All-Star teammate Kyrie Irving.
The NBA trade deadline is less than a day away and we’ve already seen one of the league’s best young players get dealt without warning. In the case of Kevin Durant, his future is still up in the air amid a volatile situation in Phoenix but he has dreams of reuniting with his ex-teammate, Kyrie Irving.
“Phoenix Suns management did their due diligence to listen to what other teams had to offer in a trade from teams that included the Warriors, Rockets, Mavs, Wizards per a Suns source,” wrote Bradon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson. “As for Dallas, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant do eventually want to be teammates again.”

Durant and Irving signed with the Nets back in 2019 but their partnership only lasted for three seasons before it broke apart in a chaotic collapse. Despite going their separate ways, Durant and Irving tried to stay together and keep their run going on a different team.
“During the waning months of Kevin Durant & Kyrie Irving’s time as Brooklyn Nets teammates (December 2022) I’m told that the two were discussing being teammates on other teams. Phoenix Suns was the preferred destination.”
The Suns traded Irving to the Mavericks in 2022 and now he’s set to form a new big three with Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant wound up in Phoenix, which is where he initially wanted to go. With Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, the Suns have shown flashes of greatness but they have yet to make a lasting impression.
Without anything to show for his tenure, Durant is running out of time in Phoenix and the pressure is building for him to achieve results. The situation is so bad that now Durant himself is in the middle of trade rumors as the deadline approaches.
As it stands, Durant is set on either staying with the Suns or playing for the Miami Heat. He’s spurned the Warriors and has expressed zero interest in joining any other franchise.
At this stage of his career, Durant wants to control his situation and he only wants to play for the Suns, the Heat, or alongside his friend and co-star. Kyrie Irving. Despite their ugly tenure in Brooklyn, the duo would make any NBA franchise an instant contender and there are a number of teams that could make it work.
After trading Luka Doncic, the Mavericks have shown they are not afraid to take risks, and they still have enough assets left to make at least one more major trade. Kevin Durant could be the one piece that puts them over the top.
If not, then the Miami Heat could come in with an offer to bring the former teammates back together again. In the wake of the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes, the Heat are looking high and low for new superstars and the duo of Irving and Durant would be more than enough to get them back on track.
For Durant, who hasn’t won the title since 2018, it’s imperative that he makes one last title run before it’s all said and done. At 36 years old, time is running out for him to capture another ring but he can still succeed in the right situation.
