Romelle Donovan in action for Birmingham City during pre-season

Romelle Donovan reveals real reason why he left Birmingham City for Brentford.

Birmingham City have loaned Romelle Donovan to Premier League outfit Brentford for the remainder of the season.

Romelle Donovan says Brentford’s long-standing interest in him and ‘the pathway’ from their B team to first team convinced him to leave Birmingham City for the Bees.

Blues loaned Donovan to Brentford on transfer deadline day and the 18-year-old has linked up with their second string. The deal is rumoured to include an option-to-buy but neither club acknowledged that in their respective statements confirming the transfer.

Reacting to his move, Donovan told Brentford’s website: “I’m buzzing, I’m over the moon. Brentford have been interested for a long while, I’m finally here, and I can’t wait to get started.

“The interest Brentford have shown over time is something you can’t turn down and the pathway from Brentford B to the first team is quite close. I’ve seen a lot of players who’ve played for the B team make their appearance for the first team.

“When you come into the training ground and you see the B team is right next to the first team, you’re not that far away. We’re all close and it’s like a big family. When you’re in the B team, you’re not that far away from the first team so I’ve got to show myself and prove myself.”

Donovan didn’t feature in Chris Davies’ plans this season but the forward made made 10 senior appearances last season. He made his debut as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Hull City shortly before his 17th birthday to become one of the youngest players in Blues’ history.

“I can’t say a bad word about them,” Donovan said of boyhood club Blues. “They’ve made me who I am today. When I was 16, I made my debut, it was a surreal moment, I couldn’t believe it. But you see a lot of players Birmingham City have produced, for my name to be in there so young is a blessing.”
