The Ireland striker came off the bench at half-time and won the praise of Hammers fans with his performance, even if he could not force an equaliser.

He did bring the best out of Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, and his all-round game earned him plaudits.

And after weeks filled with speculation about where he would end up for the remainder of the campaign, the Meathman is ready to knuckle down and let his performances do the talking.

He reckons the loan switch from Brighton, and the chance to work again under his former Seagulls boss Graham Potter, offers him a “fresh start”.

“I feel all right, to be fair. I think it’s good that I’m in a new place, a new environment and sort of having that fresh start,” he said.

“It’s been good to work with him (Potter) again. I obviously know him well from his time at Brighton, but he’s come in and has new ideas, so it’s been a positive start, and I feel I’ve settled in well.

“It’s been all I could’ve asked for, and now it’s time to let my football do the talking.”
