Ex-Birmingham City and West Brom star leaves third management role amid relegation scrap
Former Birmingham, West Brom and Aston Villa striker Kevin Phillips has left his post as manager of non-league AFC Fylde.
Former Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa striker Kevin Phillips has left his managerial post at National League side AFC Fylde “by mutual consent”, according to a club statement released on Wednesday.
Phillips had been appointed in October but has left his role after recording just five wins in 20 matches in charge, a run of results which has left Fylde in 22nd place in non-league’s highest division, one point from safety. A 2-1 home defeat to Boston United proved to be the former England international’s final game in charge.
Phillips, 51, enjoyed a successful start to his managerial career, winning promotion to the National League North with South Shields in his second season with the club before enjoying a brief spell at Hartlepool United, who he led to a mid-table finish last year after taking over in January 2024.
Hartlepool reportedly offered him a two-year contract to continue as their manager before withdrawing the offer, leaving him free to take over at Fylde, who now face the prospect of returning to the sixth tier of the English football pyramid after two seasons in the National League.
