Ryan Reynolds urges Wrexham fans to ‘act now’ after losing millions
The Hollywood actor owners of Wrexham say it’s like ‘lighting money on fire’

Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have released a new advert urging Wrexham supporters to buy the club’s kits and joking running the club is like “lighting money on fire”.

The advert is to promote the club’s 50% sale on all kits until March 5 and, as usual, it’s a more impactful plea than any other club could muster, such is the A-list presence of the two owners.

The co-chairmen are estimated to have ploughed £20m of their own money into the club since acquiring it back in 2020. During an episode of their Welcome to Wrexham documentary in 2023, they were told they had lost around $12million since taking over the club, with Reynolds responding: “I’m going to throw up.”

The advert touches on that financial loss, with McElhenney saying it is like throwing your wallet into a black hole. Wrexham have spent big by League One standards, smashing their transfer record in January with a seven-figure move for Reading’s Sam Smith and also signing former Premier League striker Jay Rodriguez. The owners have broken the club’s transfer record eight times over the past five years.

The advert begins with Reynolds, wearing Wrexham kit, saying: “You may have seen a lot of announcements recently. We signed some pretty legit players in the transfer window.”

McElhenney adds: “And we unveiled plans for a shiny new Kop, which is a stadium.”

Reynolds says: “And, it is expensive! Running a football club is like lighting money on fire except it doesn’t keep you warm.”

McElhenney adds: “Picture a black hole. Now throw your wallet in it.”
