Roman Anthony not thinking about possible Red Sox extension, has 1 goal in mind
Roman Anthony has a bright future as Baseball America’s top prospect. But his focus is on the right now and not the long-term.
Speaking to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier, the Boston Red Sox outfielder said he hasn’t thought too much about a long-term extension.
“Honestly for me, right now, there’s one goal and it’s to make the team,” Anthony said. “Being out here with these guys and these resources, the last thing I want to do is have something take my mind off of that.”
Anthony, Baseball America’s No.1 prospect, was promoted to Triple-A Worcester last year and is part of Boston’s “Big Three” with Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell. Anthony batted .344 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 35 games for the WooSox.
The Red Sox have never extended a player before their MLB debut. And while Anthony would entertain the idea of signing an extension this early on, he wants to do it the “good old-fashioned way.”
“I want to be a Red Sox for as long as I can, but it would have to be something for me that was just an absolute no-brainer,” he told Speier. “Other than that, I’m just going to try and do it the good old-fashioned way and try and go out there and just get better every day and not worry about a paycheck. Minimum salary in the big leagues is a lot of damn money, and it’s a lot of damn money to be able to play a kid’s game for a living.
