Philadelphia 76ers Players Get Booed By Home Fans At WWE Smackdown Event
Things have not gone according to plan for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2024-25 NBA season. The Sixers entered the season with genuine championship hopes on the backs of superstars Joel Embiid and Paul George as well as rising star Tyrese Maxey. But injuries have kept all three off the court at varying times and Philly now sits at 21-41, the sixth-worst record in the league.
For a while, the 76ers were able to hide behind the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl win as most fans ignored their incompetence. But the farther away from the Super Bowl we get, the more difficult that becomes. On Friday night, Philadelphia players attended WWE Smackdown at Wells Fargo Center only to be darn near booed out of the building by home fans.
Any time a WWE show comes to a city, it’s customary for the wrestling promotion to seat local athletes in the front row. The cameras will then pan to the local athletes in hopes of getting a cheap pop from the crowd cheering for their favorite athletes. Except Philly is not just any city, and Philly fans won’t cheer for just anyone.
This time around, the WWE’s plan backfired as cameras panned to George and teammates Justin Edwards, Guerschon Yabusele and Adem Bona only for fans to absolutely shower them with boos.
