On This Day 2013 – See Sky Blues Succeed At Scunny For ‘Elvis’

On this day (March 9th) in 2013 the Sky Blues travelled to the depths of North Lincolnshire to take on Scunthorpe United in League One. City were now on their third manager of the season, four if you count our member Richard Shaw who acted as caretaker for a month between ‘gaffers’!

Andy Thorn (now also a CCFPA member) had only lasted four games at the start of the season before being sacked to be replaced by the Sky Blues current ‘gaffer’ Mark Robins (on his first stint). Mark, however, decamped to Huddersfield Town in mid February. In charge for his first game today was former Sky Blue defender (now CCFPA member and very recent returnee to the CBS Arena as our ‘special guest’) Steven Pressley.

The Sky Blues gave ‘Elvis’ the perfect start to his CCFC managerial career with a 2-1 away win! Things did not start too well, however, when the Iron’s Akpo Sodje put them ahead with a header in only the eighth minute.

However, it only took a minute from the break for the Sky Blues’ skipper (now CCFPA member) Carl Baker to level the score and thirteen minutes from time the deadly striking force of City’s Leon Clarke got the Sky Blues winner.

Interestingly, when the Sky Blues lost 2-1 at home to the Iron at the Ricoh Arena on 10th November it was Leon, then on loan from Charlton Athletic, who bagged both ‘Scunny’ goals (one a penalty) and Carl got the Sky Blues goal!

This victory proved to be CCFC’s eleventh away win of the season – a new club record!
