Coventry City fans of a certain age will remember well the terrace call ‘We all dream of a team of Gary Breens’ – such was the class of the one-time centre-half of this parish.
The Republic of Ireland international was a firm favourite at Highfield Road back in the late 1990s during the club’s latter top flight years.
But fast forward 25-odd years and one ex-pro has likened the latest incarnation of Sky Blues to ‘10 Luke O’Niens’! The unexpected comparison has come from former Sunderland player Kieron Brady while trying to make sense of the Black Cats’ heaviest defeat of the season at the hands of Frank Lampard’s men at the CBS Arena.
O’Nien – a Stadium of Light stalwart, who recently passed the 300-game mark for Sunderland – has carved out a reputation for himself as a committed on-field battler with a penchant for putting his body on the line in an effort to aid the Black Cats’ cause.
Nevertheless, the 30-year-old was unable to prevent his side from slumping to a 3-0 defeat in the West Midlands last weekend, and Brady is of the opinion that it was Coventry ’s collective ability to embody the grit and spirit that the Sunderland defender has become synonymous with that helped them to such an emphatic result.
