Rio Ferdinand’s son leaves Brighton on ‘work experience’ loan to non-league side as goalkeeper looks to follow in father’s footsteps
Non-league team Havant and Waterlooville have confirmed that Rio Ferdinand’s son, Lorenz, has joined them on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 18-year-old is trying to follow in his dad’s footsteps and is currently on the books at Brighton. Now, the seventh-tier side have confirmed the young goalkeeper will be with them for the rest of the season, quipping it is on “work experience”.
WHAT HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE SAID
A club statement said: “Havant and Waterlooville Football Club are thrilled to announce that, goalkeeper, Lorenz Ferdinand has joined on work experience from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion for the remainder of the Season! Ferdinand, 18, came through the set-up at Brighton & Hove Albion where he now continues to refine his trade in their Under-21’s set-up. Lorenz links up with Shaun North’s side for the run-in as the push towards the end of the season continues! We welcome Lorenz to the Hawks and look forward to seeing him in action very soon.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Ferdinand Sr was one of the best defenders England has ever produced, with the big, ball-playing defender putting together an impressive career at Manchester United, Leeds United, West Ham United and more. Naturally, there may be extra expectation on his son to succeed. While it is good he is in Brighton’s academy and is now being given a chance in the Southern League Premier Division South with Havant, there is no guarantee he will thrive in the sport.
