Parachute power and what Fadz said Coventry City need to do after defeat by home town club
Coventry City match analysis from CoventryLive as Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner discusses some of the big talking points from Bramall Lane
Coventry City’s grip on the play-off places weakened as they were comfortably beaten by a Sheffield United side in full flow at Bramall Lane.
The Blades took a deserved 2-0 lead into the break and despite the Sky Blues putting up an early second half fight, the home side added a third goal to put the result beyond doubt and secure the full three points to move ahead of title rivals Leeds United at the top of the Championship table.
Fifth-placed Sky Blues, meanwhile, are at risk of being displaced in the top six – but only if both West Bromwich Albion and Bristol City win, at Norwich and Burnley respectively this afternoon (Sat). Here, Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner discusses some of the big talking points from the 3-1 defeat in South Yorkshire.
Hamer too hot to handle
Frank Lampard admitted in his pre-match press conference that he had watched Gus Hamer all week, such is the influence and danger of the former Sky Blues favourite. But no matter what game plan the City boss came up with, no-one could stop the Dutch-Brazilian’s quality on the night as the one-time hero of the CBS Arena orchestrated his side’s first half lead, having a major hand in both goals in the opening 45 minutes.
Just as he had run the show in the 2-2 draw earlier in the season, so the dynamic midfielder won the early free-kick at Bramall Lane – drawing Bobby Thomas into a professional foul – before promptly sticking it over the wall and into the top corner where Oliver Dovin got a hand to it but was unable to stop it going in. Eleven minutes later he played a subline reverse pass to play Femi Seriki in on the right to feed the unmarked Tyrese Campbell in the box for a precise first-time finish.
