Hull City boss Ruben Selles defends striker as he explains Luton Town changes
City’s home struggles came back to haunt them against fellow strugglers Luton Town on Saturday
Hull City head coach Ruben Selles has defended striker Kyle Joseph after the striker made it eleven games without a goal during Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Luton Town.
Joseph again led the line in the absence of the suspended Joao Pedro but saw his chances limited, with his only sight of goal coming in the second half when he was tackled out of it before pulling the trigger and was taken off seconds later after jeers of frustration from some home supporters.
The 23-year-old, who joined City for £2.5m from Blackpool in January, was replaced by Matt Crooks three minutes after the hour, with the Tigers chasing in vain for a way back into a game they saw slip away from them from the moment Lewie Coyle’s clearance cannoned into the back of Alfie Jones and into the back of their own net less than a minute into the second half.
“It’s always difficult in the striker position when you don’t find those goals or don’t even find the situation where you can put the ball in the net. The pressure is coming for every striker in this league and for every striker in the world in the position, and he needs to understand,” Selles told Hull Live.
“I don’t let myself define those situations by the final end product. Obviously, he knows that he needs to be consistent on that, and he’s working on it, and yes, I’m pretty sure that his moment will arrive.
“We have situations here. We had it at Reading with players who have similar situations, and once that first action comes into the net, it unlocks the system, and then he continues scoring.
