Umpire’s Embarrassing Blunder Gets Viral Attention in Mariners-Athletics Game

Athletics outfielder Seth Brown made a strange bit of MLB history in Friday’s win over the Seattle Mariners — thanks to an odd blunder from the umpire. Brown had a patient at-bat in the top of the sixth inning, battling pitcher Gregory Santos to a full count before watching another ball. That wasn’t enough for Brown to earn a base, however, as the umpire apparently lost track of the count — as did Brown and the rest of his team. He remained in the batter’s box, returning for another pitch and later earning a walk on the fifth ball of the at-bat.

The at-bat got some viral attention when it was shared by Jomboy Media in a post on X, which pointed out that even the announcing crew missed the blunder. The post drew some big reactions, with fans pointing their frustration in every direction. “I don’t understand how this happened. so crazy nobody noticed, the ump, the batter, the dugout, the announcer… was everyone sleepwalking?” a fan wrote in reply.
