The 22-year-old thought he did enough in spring training to earn a promotion to the big leagues, but Mayer and fellow top prospect Roman Anthony opened the season in Triple-A Worcester while Kristian Campbell made the trip to Texas.

Cora cited Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar’s early career demotion when he initially responded to Mayer’s candid comments. But Boston’s manager also showed an appreciation for the versatile infielder’s mindset.

“It’s good that he feels that way,” Cora told reporters, per The Athletic. “Just got to be patient. That’s the way it works. We got some good players here. Obviously, balance means a lot to us offensively. Like I said before, (Mayer and Anthony) are an injury away, probably, from the big leagues, but I actually think it’s the other way around, they’re going to push us to make decisions.”

Mayer and Anthony both put some pressure on Cora and company with excellent starts to the season at the dish. And if the hitting woes the Red Sox suffered in Texas persist, maybe Boston decision-makers will start thinking about promotions for the other two members of the “big three” sooner rather than later.
