Leeds United told £1m man signed by Marcelo Bielsa has been unhappy ever since Daniel Farke joined
Daniel Farke’s loyalty to those in his Leeds United starting XI is admirable even if it means sticking with players that are out of form, such as Brenden Aaronson and Illan Meslier.
But it means those not in and around the starting XI are made to wait for a chance. Willy Gnonto has not started a league game in 2025, though Graham Smyth thinks Gnonto will start against Luton on Saturday.
For those not on the fringes and have two or more players above them in the pecking order, it is almost impossible to make a breakthrough. Isaac Schmidt has failed to start a league game for Leeds this season.
Even if, he has been called up by Switzerland and won senior caps in the last few weeks. Charlie Cresswell was forced to search for pastures new last summer and Joe Gelhardt left the club on loan in January.
Leeds told Joe Gelhardt has been unhappy ever since Farke joined
It is five years since Leeds signed Gelhardt from cash-strapped Wigan for just £1m under Marcelo Bielsa. Alan Shearer have described Gelhardt as “magic” on Match of the Day in 2022, starring in the 21’s initially.
He made that first-team breakthrough under Bielsa and continued with Jesse Marsch at the helm. A drop to the Championship was seen as a possible benefit to players like Gelhardt and Crysencio Summerville.
But it never worked out, Gelhardt managing just two Championship starts under Farke since the German’s arrival. They came back in August 2023, and in January of this year, Gelhardt joined Hull City on loan.
Starring at Hull, teammate Kyle Joseph told Hull Live that Gelhardt has been unhappy for the last couple of years: “He’s obviously had a difficult time at Leeds in terms of the way he hasn’t really played much.
