Jamie Vardy contract plea as Ruud van Nistelrooy tells Leicester City what they should allow
Club icon Jamie Vardy is heading into the final eight matches of his 13-year Leicester City career unless he signs a contract extension ahead of the new campaign
Jamie Vardy has earned the right to make the call on his Leicester City future and the next eight games should not be his last for the club, manager Ruud van Nistelrooy believes.
With City highly likely to fall into the Championship, there is a growing sense that Vardy’s glittering career at the King Power Stadium will end this season.
City will have to adjust to a significantly-reduced budget in the second tier, and renewing the contract of a 38-year-old, and one of their top earners, may not be seen as sensible business.
But for van Nistelrooy, Vardy’s 13 years as City’s main man merits a “massive say” in what happens next. In short, if the striker wants to stay, he should be allowed to.
Vardy has proven he’s fit enough to keep playing. He’s only missed two Premier League matches all season and ranks fourth in the City squad for minutes played this term.
He was scoring at a decent rate too. But after six goals in his first 14 matches, he’s now netted just once in his last 14, his goals drying up just as the club’s have.
