MLB Insider Shuts Down Popular Mets-Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Theory

All it took was a six-second clip to raise the idea of Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. teaming up in the New York Mets’ lineup next season. SportsNet New York’s official Mets X (formerly Twitter) account shared a video Friday afternoon featuring Guerrero Jr. chatting with Soto, along with Mets outfielders Jose Siri and Starling Marte, before the Mets’ 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. “Vladdy is literally BEGGING to be a Met,” X user @WardyNYM wrote, quoting SNY’s video in a separate post. Count MLB insider Jon Heyman among the nearly 280,000 people who saw Wardy’s post. “That is assuredly not what’s happening here,” Heyman wrote on Saturday evening.

“He has consistently said he wants to stay a Jay,” Heyman added. “Beyond that, the Jays absolutely need to keep him.”

Guerrero and the Blue Jays failed to reach a new contract before his self-imposed Feb. 18 deadline. He is widely expected to hit free agency this fall, and it’s unclear if the Blue Jays will trade him ahead of the July 31 deadline. Heyman is correct that the Blue Jays need to keep Guerrero. However, a player “consistently” saying they want to stick around doesn’t mean they’ll settle for less and sign a new contract, especially not when they’re a 26-year-old slugger with four All-Star nods and two Silver Sluggers on his resume.

An X user subsequently accused Heyman of “shilling” for agent Scott Boras. “[T]ry to gain a modicum of knowledge before the nasty tweet (you can look up modicum),” Heyman replied.
