Coventry City passed up the opportunity to put a huge six points between themselves and their nearest play-off rivals with a fairly limp defeat devoid of the grit and spirit displayed by bottom club Plymouth Argyle in their unlikely quest for survival.

Too many players were off colour which was particularly frustrating following Good Friday’s comprehensive victory over West Bromwich Albion, during which there were many positives on which to draw. Fortunately, however, results elsewhere meant that the 3-1 defeat wasn’t as damaging as it could have been on another day when the division threw up a handful of surprise results.

Where’s VAR when you need it?
One of the game’s biggest controversies was the fact that the player who went on to be Plymouth’s clear man of the match, Mustapha Bundu, was allowed to stay on the pitch after his aggressive challenge on Jamie Allen just before the half hour mark. Frank Lampard was clearly angry that the 28-year-old forward got away with a yellow card when replays provided compelling evidence that it should have been a red.

Had VAR been in operation the player would almost certainly have been sent off rather than allowed to continue to score two and set up the other in the Pilgrims’ 3-1 win. Incidentally, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto might also have been dismissed had a video ref been on duty later on for flicking a leg out, David Beckham-style v Argentina, when he and Bali Mumba clashed on the far touchline.
