Leeds council leader makes Newcastle United point ahead of Leeds United promotion parade
The leader of Leeds City Council says he expects “hundreds of thousands” to take to the streets
Leeds City Council leader Cllr James Lewis has outlined how the route for Leeds United’s promotion parade will aim to enable the greatest number of fans to get a glimpse of their heroes in the safest manner possible.
He likened the bus parade to that of Newcastle United upon their League Cup success in February and believes “hundreds of thousands” will take to the streets to celebrate United’s triumph.
While date and route details have yet to be formally confirmed, it is widely anticipated that the parade could take place on the bank holiday of May 5, two days after Leeds play Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the season.
Should United win their final two games, they will lift the Championship trophy. But the parade will go ahead regardless of whether Leeds clasp hands of silverware, with civic leaders keen for the club to make up for lost time given promotion celebrations in 2020 had to be dialled down due to the Covid pandemic.
“We’re keen to do something whether we’re champions or second because we didn’t do it in 2020,” Cllr James, who is a United supporter and attended the 6-0 thrashing of Stoke City last Monday, told Leeds Live .
“Look how many people turned out to see Newcastle United winning the Carabao Cup. So I’m not underestimating what a big event it’ll be.
