MLB Writer Predicts Mariners To Cut Ties With Dominant $7.6 Million Ace

The Seattle Mariners could finally crack into the postseason this year. Their pitching staff is still one of the best in the league, but they pair that with a competent offense as well. Seattle also has enough starting pitching that it has been rumored to be open to trading away one of these starters to acquire some offensive production. But which pitcher would be traded? ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently made the prediction that the Mariners could look to trade their ace, Logan Gilbert, in order to acquire more hitting.

“Indeed, the biggest challenge for president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto will be to decipher those splits: Do the Mariners need hitting or do they actually need pitching?” Schoenfield wrote. “Either way, if they do collapse, Gilbert — who wasn’t signed to an extension like Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh were — would bring back a blockbuster return given he has two more years of team control and an impeccable record for health and durability (not to mention a brilliant start to 2025).”

Gilbert hasn’t signed a contract extension, and it doesn’t seem like he has any interest in doing so. Because of this, he may be the pitcher who gets traded, if the Mariners decide to deal one away. To make this even more appetizing for Seattle, Gilbert likely has the most trade value of the starting rotation. He would be worth multiple top prospects as well as some proven big league talent if he were dealt away. To me, it seems like a longshot that Seattle will deal him away, but it could make sense if the team is willing to make a huge splash to add big league hitters.
