‘This is why we love football’ – Palace boss sums up period of play between Henderson’s penalty save and Devenny’s first goal
Oliver Glasner has explained his emotions during the period of play between Dean Henderson’s penalty save and Justin Devveny’s first Crystal Palace goal at Aston Villa.
Villa were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time when the VAR spotted Will Hughes standing on Leon Bailey inside the penalty area.
Eagles stopper Henderson went the right way to deny Youri Tielemans, and 57 seconds later, Ismaila Sarr crossed for 21-year-old Justin Devenny to score his very first Crystal Palace goal to put Glanser’s side 2-1 up.
Ross Barkley equalised late on to deny Palace all three points.
“This is why we all love football,” said Glasner.
“Within three minutes, our emotions changed so often. The game continued and all of a sudden, the VAR intervened.
“I have been here for several games in the Premier League and usually VAR never intervenes, so it must have been a clear and wrong decision.
“I didn’t see it, but I trust the referees. It was an unbelievable save. We were then defending a corner and had a transition where our three attackers had 80-yard sprints.
“Ismaila was lucky he had a bad last touch, so he had to cross. JP missed the ball and Justin finished like an experienced guy. He’s left-footed, but he stayed cool with his right foot and curved [his shot] around the defender and into the corner.
