Leeds United podcast: Daniel Farke the 'most capable' to take Whites up - Pope - BBC Sport

49ers look certain to grant Leeds United exit this January after new Farke comments.

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has been on the fringes ever since he returned from his Sunderland loan in 2023, with Daniel Farke unable to find a place for him in the side at all.

Leeds’ attacking setup is going to have them there or thereabouts come the end of the season, and the options that Daniel Farke has at his disposal look remarkable in comparison to a lot of their rivals.

The issue that Farke has, therefore, is finding a place for these players in his squad on a regular basis, with only four options in attack available with each game.

Farke issues update on Joe Gelhardt’s lack of Leeds involvement

On the fringes this season and last has been Joe Gelhardt, returning from a loan spell at Sunderland when Leeds were relegated, only to find himself unable to make any sort of impact under the current manager.

It’s a shame to see Gelhardt in the position he’s in, after breaking into the side during the 21/22 season and looking a superb talent.

Gelhardt’s last outing for Leeds came off the bench away at Norwich at the start of October, and was absent from the squad for four games prior to Farke saying this pre-Luton Town (via Adam Pope):

Farke must sanction Gelhardt exit in January to stop this stagnation

There’s no reason at the moment for Farke to start throwing Gelhardt into the mix for starts, given his attacking setup is working just fine.

That said, the fact that someone as talented and capable in the Championship or top end of League One as Gelhardt is not being able to even touch the Leeds squad is alarming.

You would hope that Farke is already decided in letting Gelhardt out on loan in the new year, because his career is already stagnating massively and needs a jump-start as soon as possible.

Farke’s side isn’t currently crying out for Gelhardt to be involved but that damning indictment of his standing in the squad should prompt not only him to ask to leave, but Farke and the 49ers to grant it.
