NY Jets reveal multiple ‘setbacks’ in alarming Jordan Travis injury update.
The NY Jets didn’t draft Jordan Travis with the expectation that he would play in his rookie season. The former Florida State star suffered a serious leg injury in late 2023 that ended his college career prematurely, and the Jets were aware that his recovery would be a work in progress.
Still, there was initially some hope that Travis would be ready for the start of training camp. The Jets hoped that Travis would be able to get some reps in this summer ahead of what was supposed to be a redshirt year for the rookie QB.
Instead, Travis missed the entire summer and has yet to return to practice. Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich was asked about Travis’ status when speaking to reporters on Wednesday, and the update was not an encouraging one.
Ulbrich revealed that Travis had suffered multiple “setbacks” in his rehab process and that he had not progressed as the team would have hoped. The Jets do not expect Travis to return to practice at any point this season.
Jordan Travis injury update is bad news for the NY Jets
The Jets always expected the 2024 season to be a redshirt year for the former Heisman finalist. Travis was widely seen as a potential Day 2 pick in this past year’s draft before his leg injury ended his college career and tanked his draft stock.
The plan was for Travis to sit and learn behind Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor for at least a year while he rehabbed his injury. Unfortunately, part of that plan was for Travis to gain much-needed reps behind the two veterans in practice.
It’s never ideal for any player to suffer setbacks in their rehab from a major injury, and it’s even less ideal when said player is a rookie quarterback. Travis’ first opportunity to return to the field will be OTAs next spring, and at this point, it’s not a guarantee he’s ready by that point.
There’s a real chance that Travis never appears in a game for the organization that drafted him. The Jets will likely add a rookie quarterback in next year’s draft to join Travis and a veteran, possibly Taylor, in the team’s QB room.
By the time Travis steps foot on the field for the Jets he could essentially be an afterthought behind a new rookie QB and an established veteran. That’s not exactly how the Jets envisioned his development plan when they drafted him in the fifth round this past April.
In a perfect world, Travis would have been able to return from his injury this past summer and give the Jets an extended look at him in practice. However, the unfortunate reality of the situation is that he will be 25 years old before he even participates in an NFL practice.
